Mary E. Howell

Mary E. Howell is a plaintiffs’ civil rights attorney and graduate of Tulane University Law School, who has been in private practice in New Orleans, Louisiana for over twenty-seven years. She has handled numerous cases involving police misconduct. Additionally, she has represented victims of hate crimes and whistleblowers who have exposed governmental corruption and wrongdoing.

Currently, Howell is involved in representing the plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit composed of thousands of persons arrested for traffic or other minor charges.  During their arrests, plaintiffs were subjected to unlawful strip and visual body cavity searches in the Orleans Parish Jail.

In recognition of the work she has done to protect civil rights, Howell has received a number of awards from various civil rights and civil liberties organizations. She is the former chair of the Civil Rights Section of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association and a member of the National Lawyers Guild.
