On January 13, 2013, Alyssa was arrested. She was unconscious when police officers carried her into a cell. Police should know alcohol intoxication can cause death. The officers did not have Alyssa evaluated and when an officer checked on her later that night, she had died of alcohol poisoning. Her life could have been saved by prompt medical treatment. Video from the station documented the actions of the police officers. Alyssa’s only heir at law was her estranged husband who was incarcerated when the incident took place. Damages were a challenge in this case because it was difficult to show that he lost her support and companionship. Alyssa’s mother brought the case as Alyssa’s personal representative.

Dr. MLK, Jr: A Legacy of Grassroots Activism

Dr. MLK, Jr: A Legacy of Grassroots Activism

Contrary to what the LBJ estate would have you believe, Dr. King didn’t always have consistent allies in the White House as he worked tirelessly to fight against government oppression and economic exclusion of Black Americans.  Dr. King’s work largely centered on supporting and uplifting local grassroots campaigns in places like Selma, Birmingham, Albany, GA, and Chicago. His legacy is a reminder that effective local organizing can transform national conversations and, eventually, policy.  ...

Elections 2024: Police Accountability Is On the Ballot

Elections 2024: Police Accountability Is On the Ballot

Here’s NPAP’s guide to state ballot measures that could have a significant impact on our ability to hold police accountable. Some key issues we are watching this election include: New fines and fees, which studies have found disproportionately impact people living in poverty, often trapping them in cycles of debt and incarceration. Levying and enforcing fines and fees distract law enforcement from their core responsibilities, focusing on debt collection instead of focusing on...

Election 2024: Where Harris and Trump Stand on Police Accountability—NPAP’s Breakdown

With the election coming up, we want to be clear: NPAP doesn’t pick sides or endorse candidates. We have one focus—and that’s to hold law enforcement accountable. As you prepare to vote, we encourage you to take a hard look at where candidates stand on real reform and accountability. That’s why we’ve outlined where our two Presidential candidates stand on what we believe are the main issues at stake in policing today: accountability,...

NPAP Wins Major Victory in Missouri Court of Appeals, Protecting Voters from Misleading Ballot Measure

St. Louis, MO – The National Police Accountability Project (NPAP) has successfully challenged the ballot language of Missouri’s SJR 71, a controversial initiative that would have allowed court fees to be used to fund police pensions and prosecutor salaries, creating a significant conflict of interest. The Missouri Court of Appeals ruled in NPAP’s favor, ensuring that voters will now have clearer and more accurate information ahead of the November election. Who: NPAP, a national...

Wife’s Plea for Help Ends in Fatal Sheriff’s Deputy Shooting

Wife’s Plea for Help Ends in Fatal Sheriff’s Deputy Shooting

Twenty-three seconds was all it took for a Sacramento Sheriff’s deputy to decide that the best course of action to help the caller, Elisa Daher, was to kill her husband in front of her. Now, we’re suing to help Elisa get the details. Justice for Jaime. We seek justice for Jaime Naranjo, who tragically lost his life when a Sacramento Sheriff’s deputy, called to assist with a mental health crisis, fatally shot him....
